VDO speeds up remote download for digital tachographs with attractive bundled solutions
Frankfurt am Main/Germany, April 24, 2009
Continental is once again pioneering new solutions for fleet operators. Under its VDO product brand, the company was the first manufacturer to introduce a remote data transfer system - VDO Remote Download - operating on short range radio and the mobile communications network. The company has now also launched an attractive program to promote the system. In order to facilitate the change to this more convenient technology for fleet operators, the manufacturer has created cost-effective bundles of the digital tachograph (DTCO) and the Remote Download Device (DLD) for all common vehicle models and launched a comprehensive exchange program. Companies who replace their old digital tachograph from VDO or a competitor with one of these packages featuring the VDO DTCO 1381 and VDO DLD Wide Range or VDO DLD Short Range will benefit from preferential prices for the new technology.
One of the core features of the packages is the latest generation VDO DTCO 1381 digital tachograph featuring significantly improved processor performance, a more efficient thermal printer and a quick download mode for mass storage devices. The main element of the system is the handy VDO Remote Download Device. As soon as the Remote Download solution has been installed in the vehicle and the DLD has been initialized, the data from the tachograph can be compressed, encrypted and transmitted to the office by radio wave for statutory archiving purposes and evaluation. The download of the data from the digital tachograph is authorized directly from the office using a company card. This means that the fleet operator does not have to assign a staff member to download the data, resulting in significant cost savings.
VDO has developed two data transfer solutions tailored to the usage requirements of the particular operator. For international operations there is the DLD Wide Range solution, which uses the blanket coverage of the GPRS mobile communications network and a mobile Internet connection to enable data to be downloaded from almost anywhere in the world. The DLD Short Range solution has been developed for companies which operate over a smaller range. This system works by establishing a local WLAN connection. Accordingly, all of the DTCO data from a vehicle can be conveniently and regularly read out as soon as the vehicle returns to the company premises.
Both the driver and the company benefit from the Remote Download system. Drivers can concentrate fully on their main duties and no longer have to worry about download cycles. On the other hand, fleet managers can access the data directly regardless of the current location of the vehicle and no longer have to remind drivers to perform downloads. They are also spared the occasional task of climbing through the cabs in person ahead of the weekend. In fact, with the Remote Download Device the fleet managers are just a few mouse clicks away from meeting their obligations.
In order to ensure that the radio relay system for DTCO data becomes established as the new standard as quickly as possible, VDO has now started a promotional campaign with an attractive exchange offer for its own digital tachographs and the units of competitors. Companies which switch to the new technology will be able to obtain the bundles featuring the VDO DTCO 1381/ VDO DLD Wide Range package and the VDO DTCO 1381/ VDO DLD Short Range solution. The range of promotional packages available already covers a variety of models of major commercial vehicle manufacturers such as Mercedes, DAF and MAN and is being constantly expanded.
