Qualcomm and Continental Cooperate to Market Telematics and Digital Tachograph Solutions in Europe
Cooperation Agreement Enables Both Companies to Offer Innovative Telematics Services via Solutions That Integrate Their Technologies
Waalre/The Netherlands and Villingen-Schwenningen/Germany, 19 January 2010.
Continental, one of the leading companies in the global automotive industry, and Qualcomm Incorporated (Nasdaq: QCOM), a leading provider of business-to-business wireless enterprise applications and services, announced today that they have signed a cooperation agreement allowing both companies to promote and market their respective technology solutions for the transport logistics industry in Europe.
Pursuant to the cooperation agreement, Continental will market Qualcomm’s fleet management solutions through its VDO digital tachograph distribution network. Simultaneously, Qualcomm will market Continental’s VDO brand digital tachograph products and related services to its European customers. The cooperation agreement also enables joint customers to automatically download and transfer data from the VDO digital tachograph’s mass memory onto a secure site accessible to customers at any time.
“Because the combined solution transmits driver card data and mass memory from the digital tachograph wirelessly, drivers will no longer need to interrupt their journeys to download this critical data at their home base,” said Bill Karnazes, managing director of Qualcomm Enterprise Services Europe. “Transport companies can plan their trips and vehicles more efficiently and will be able to reduce their operational costs.”
“This commercial, technical and marketing alliance in Europe between two leaders in the field of telematics is expected to provide European transport and logistics professionals access to fully integrated fleet management solutions, which are designed to contribute to improving their productivity and reducing operational overheads,” adds Lutz Scholten, vice president, Business Unit Commercial Vehicles and Aftermarket, Continental.
Fleet management solutions developed by Qualcomm, such as the OmniExpress™ mobile information system and the Mobile Computing Platform 200 series (MCP200), when connected to the latest generation of VDO digital tachographs, are expected soon to enable fleet managers to automatically and remotely download mass memory information and access it at Qualcomm’s FleetVisor™ Web portal. Additionally, VDO customers equipped with VDO digital tachographs will have the opportunity to access Qualcomm’s innovative fleet management solutions through the VDO sales force. This solution can assist fleet managers in ensuring compliance with the European Union’s data archiving requirements using Continental’s Web-based data evaluation program, VDO TIS-Web.
