VDO Presents New Vehicle Diagnostics – ContiSys

Universal vehicle diagnostic system marks debut

Frankfurt, September 16, 2008

Continental, one of the world’s leading automotive suppliers, is now bundling its know-how in a new family of VDO vehicle diagnostic equipment, unveiled at Automechanika in Frankfurt. Incorporating the company’s cumulative expertise in the original equipment area, the brand-independent vehicle diagnostic systems in the new ContiSys range guarantee workshops fast, reliable and uncomplicated analysis of a vehicle’s electronics – covering everything from its engine control system through to the safety and comfort systems and sensors. The new product family - with ContiSys OBD and ContiSys VCI, as well as the ContiSys PAD, developed specifically for tough workshop requirements - provides everything workshops - whether brand-affiliated or independent - are looking for in the way of modern and efficient diagnostics solutions.

The heart in the new VDO product family is the handheld ContiSys OBD test device. Sporting a handy, lightweight and sturdy design, the multilingual tester is operated via a clearly structured menu. It can be used to read the settings on a wide array of vehicle models and to verify the proper functioning of or to adjust the  settings on essential systems from air bags and air conditioning units through to suspension controls and service gauges or even electronic parking brakes. Fault memories can be read out and deleted and actuators and sensors checked. Continental has stored over 20,000 manufacturer-specific trouble codes on the ContiSys OBD for this purpose. Additonally, VDO has set up an optional software update service on the Internet as well as a repair hotline.

The new ContiSys VCI vehicle diagnostics system can do even more.. This system connects the vehicle electronics directly with the workshop computer via the OBD diagnostics interface and a WiFi module.

In combination with the ContiSys DSI diagnostics, which is likewise new, it offers not only direct access to comprehensive databases, but also maintenance schedules, parts lists and circuit diagrams. Unlike ContiSys OBD, ContiSys VCI offers a wide spectrum of functions in the vehicle as well. It can, for example, conduct more far-reaching tests of engine controls, activate components, encode injectors or even initiate tire pressure monitoring systems. With the ContiSys VCI, all of this is possible at the press of a button and the click of a mouse. It is currently offered in six languages. VDO also offers the option of regular online updates for the fully Windows-compatible diagnostics software and vehicle interface. As in the case of ContiSys OBD, a repair hotline is also available.

Because a conventional computer is hardly up to the rough demands of an auto workshop, VDO has added ContiSys PAD to its range. This special PC pad system is intended specifically for use in the service area. Equipped with Bluetooth and WiFi, the portable computer is extremely sturdy and handy, impact- and splash-proof and is easily readable in all light conditions thanks to a high-contrast display. The casing has a finish that is resistant to all fluids normally found in workshops. Its powerful storage battery guarantees long operation when the device is not hooked up to an electric power source. A docking station, including a DVD drive, is optionally offered.
